Introduction and development

The digital e-pen calligraphy technology was initiated due to the rise of a global craze for learning Chinese. Under the general leadership of Professor Kao Bo-yuan, former vice president of Tamkang University, the school’s Calligraphy Research Laboratory, Distance Learning Development Group and Information Engineering Department conducted cross-disciplinary cooperation, led by Professor Chang Bing-huang, together with Professors Kuo Ching-hua and Hong Wen-bin and their research assistants, with the premise of how to create a combination of computer systems and traditional calligraphy, after more than three years of research, they successfully developed the world’s most advanced computer writing system, named “e-pen writing system”, and formally applied for patents in various countries.
The “e-pen calligraphy and painting system” can write with an e-pen on a designated writing board or touch screen, and can express the strokes, pen tips and different thickness changes from hard pens to brushes, comparable to various writing tools. In addition, it can also be used for practicing calligraphy, writing, and the layout of various calligraphy works. Traditional writing pens, paper, ink, and copybooks are no longer needed. It can be called an innovative revolution in writing tools. The content created with the digital e-pen can be expressed smoothly in terms of pen strokes and brush strokes, which is the same as the techniques of lifting and pressing the pen when using a traditional brush. At the same time, the handwriting can be played and stored in real time, which is convenient for teaching and display.

After years of research and development and updating, e-pen technology has now developed to the third generation “e-pen magic”. Combined with Taihan Technology’s drawing board, it contains various basic learning templates for hard pen and brush learning, famous calligraphy examples and other learning content. Through dynamic handwriting presentation, it subverts the traditional calligraphy examples and learning methods.
